About the Server Engineer:
The Server Engineer is responsible for providing technical support, troubleshooting, and maintaining the server environment and related hardware and software. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the client has a seamless and productive computing environment.
The candidate would be mostly responsible for ensuring that the client’s server environment is stable and supported according to the signed contract and aligned with the client’s policies and procedures.
The position will be based at a customer site in Modderfontein, and/or other sites.
The position will be for a fixed term starting 1 November 2024 – 30 October 2026.
Minimum Requirements.
- Proven experience as a Server Engineer or similar role.
- IT Degree/Diploma or related qualification is preferred
- MCSE Certification is preferred
- Proficiency in operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux) and software applications.
- Strong hardware/Software troubleshooting skills.
- Experience working with ManageEngine
- Familiarity with network protocols, TCP/IP, and DNS.
- 5 – 10 years experience working for an IT Company and supporting an enterprise environment.
- Broad knowledge across various OEM systems (hardware and software)
- Working experience of Patch Management
- 2 -3 years VMWare Experience
- Working experience of Backup Management
- Server Operating system knowledge, experience and certification .
- General server hardware understanding, knowledge and experience.
- General Storage hardware understanding, knowledge and experience
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA S+
- Knowledge of ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) principles is beneficial.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide level 2 support for in-scope software.
- Provide break-fix and level 2 support for hardware.
- Provide incident determination, root cause analysis and resolution.
- Manage deployment efforts using formal project management tools, methodologies and standards (e.g., Itil change and configuration management practices).
- Deploy approved core software image(s) on applicable devices and servers
- Conduct deployment reviews and provide results to man.
- Provide technical assistance for defining application software image specifications and deployment plans.
- Electronically or manually deploy approved application software image(s) and Software patches on applicable devices or servers.
- Develop and document in the standards and procedures manual imacd procedures that meet requirements and adhere to defined policies.
- Conduct pre-installation and site survey activities (e.g., network connectivity, power, data jack preparation) in accordance with the procedures and specific service request.
- Build, configure and test the system in accordance with the standard hardware. configuration(s) and software image and in accordance with the procedures and specific service request.
- Perform hardware and software imacds and re-installations in accordance with the specific service request, procedures and other application policies (e.g., security policies)
- Conduct data and application migration that is necessary due to any hardware or software imacds and re-installations.
- Update all management tools (e.g., asset management database) with required data and close an imacd service request.
- Coordinate with help desk and all other necessary provider, third-party and man support organizations to manage all imacd service requests to resolution and closure
- Develop and document in the standards and procedures manual on-site technical support procedures that meet requirements and adhere to defined policies.

- Install a new physical server following the receipt of an approved Additional Service Request.
- Perform hardware upgrades and technical changes to existing server hardware following the receipt of an approved Additional Service Request.
- Monitor and respond to server hardware monitoring alerts in accordance with the Incident Management Process where applicable.
- Install and configure new server virtualisation / hypervisor software following the receipt of an approved Additional Service Request.
- Configure and maintain server virtualisation software.
- Monitor and respond to server virtualisation monitoring alerts in accordance with the Incident Management Process where applicable.
- If installed virtualisation software version becomes lower than N-1, install and configure server virtualisation software of N and N-1 following the receipt of an approved Additional Service Request.
- Perform a minor release patch of the server virtualisation software (N and N-1) in accordance with the Operational Change Management Process.
- Perform a major release upgrade of the virtualisation software in accordance with the Operational Change Management Process following the receipt of an approved Additional Service Request.
- Configure and maintain file and print server software.
- Monitor and respond to file and print monitoring alerts in accordance with the Incident
- Management Process where applicable.
- Modify the file and print service configuration.
- Provide the internal minimal toolsets and supporting infrastructure required for Central
- Monitoring and Event Management of Supported Servers.
- Trouble shooting network cards (“NIC”) which forms part of the DCE service;
- Configure and maintain supplier central monitoring and event management systems to enable 24 x 7 monitoring of events and alerts generated from the monitoring agents implemented by provider on the supported servers.
- Monitor events and alerts 24 x 7, sent from the monitoring agents, implemented on the Supported Servers. Create tickets in the Bidder Incident Management System, based on predefined, standardised thresholds as set for events and alerts.
- Perform general Administrative User administration functions, such as adding
- Administrative Users, changing passwords, granting access.
- Manage and maintain Administrative User administration tools.
- Manage and maintain password for local admin account.
- Apply service account password changes as specified in accordance with the security policy.

- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, when necessary.

- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
